Strategic Planning for Organizational Focus and Alignment
Strategic Planning for Organizational Focus and Alignment
Objective
In mid-2011, while undergoing significant change within the organization, Presbyterian Mission Agency approached KonTerra for support to develop a strategic plan. The objective was to define and articulate a clear vision of where Presbyterian Mission Agency can and should be positioned to strengthen and support its mission world-wide.
Solution
Following several collaborative conversations between PCUSA/Presbyterian Mission Agency and KonTerra, we developed a customized, two-phased approach to the planning initiative. In the first phase, existing data and input from stakeholders was used to inform the basis for developing strategic statements (Vision, Mission, Core Values and Directional Goals) and key areas of focus for the organization. The outcomes of this first phase served as the foundation for the second phase, which informed the strategic alignment considerations for Presbyterian Mission Agency, as well as allocation of resources for the next four years.
Utilizing an asset-based approach to strategic planning, and working in a consultative/facilitation model, we established and partnered directly with a Strategic Planning Working Group from PCUSA/Presbyterian Mission Agency; a Strategic Advisory Group – made up of elected council members and constituents – provided feedback throughout the process. The success of such a significant initiative hinged on the active involvement of PCUSA/Presbyterian Mission Agency leadership and key stakeholders.
Result
As a result of the process, PCUSA/Presbyterian Mission Agency ultimately produced a compelling and focused strategic plan that positions the organization for success in achieving their mission. This plan pursues key strategic focus areas which encourage enthusiastic support from stakeholders and create a platform for on-going strategic thinking for PCUSA/Presbyterian Mission Agency. ‘The support provided by The KonTerra Group has helped our organization clarify our mission and focus our energy and resources on more effectively accomplishing our strategic goals’ said Linda Valentine, Executive Director of PCUSA.
Going forward, the organization now has a living planning document which serves as a strategic road map and provides a compelling narrative, greater focus, and clearer direction. It will act as a guide for decision making, resource allocation, and improved alignment in pursuit of the organization’s vision, mission, and directional goals. The process established a platform for ongoing strategic thinking within PMA to ensure that strategic direction is evaluated and informed at periodic intervals as the organization grows over time.
