Catalyst For Peace

Objective

Developed and first implemented in 2008, by the Sierra Leonean human rights organization, Forum of Conscience, and the U.S.-based operating foundation, Catalyst for Peace, Fambul Tok incorporated as an international non-governmental organization, Fambul Tok International (FTI), in late 2009, with the “Fambul Tok” program in Sierra Leone as its flagship project. The program was launched to “create space for effective community-led and owned reconciliation processes” for perpetrators and victims of the violence in Sierra Leone’s eleven-year civil war. The dramatic success of the program quickly resulted in demand for rapid expansion. From the outset, FTI leaders recognized the need to plan and act strategically to maximize effectiveness and resources while maintaining the integrity and quality of the program.

Solution

Since 2008 (the first full year of the Fambul Tok program), KonTerra has had the honor of supporting its leadership with a range of consulting, advisory and facilitation services. Fambul Tok was founded on and continues to embody the most leading-edge processes of consultative program design, and “accompaniment” models of partnership with communities. Throughout the process, KonTerra provided an objective perspective, a listening ear challenging questions at key moments, and occasional bits of advice based on experience. The engagement has involved formal strategic and operational planning, executive coaching, and most importantly, facilitation of dialogue with key stakeholders to support their process of “emergent design.”

Result

The support provided by The KonTerra Group has helped facilitate the ongoing dialogue needed for the future success of both organizations. The leaders of the organization continue to shepherd it forward, working with communities to reconcile and build lasting peace around the country.
